Do you need a website if you already have Yelp and Facebook?

By Steve Alfa, October 12, 2026. 4 minute read.

Short answer: yes. Yelp and Facebook are where some customers find you. Your website is where most of them decide.

What Yelp and Facebook do

They show your name, your reviews and a way to contact you. That is useful. It is also exactly what they show for every competitor on the same screen, with an ad for one of them on top. On Yelp, that ad is often paid for by the company that wants your customer.

You also do not control the page. The layout, the order of the reviews, the "people also viewed" box with three other plumbers in it, none of that is yours.

What a website does

When someone searches your business name on Google, your website is the first result. When they search "plumber near me," Google shows the map pack and then websites. If you do not have one, you are not in that second list at all.

A website is the only page where you are the only company on the screen. Your prices, your photos, your license, your number at the top. No competitor's ad. No "people also viewed."

What happens when the website is missing

About 17% of small businesses still have no website, according to a 2025 Clutch survey reported by Network Solutions. A third of those owners say a website is not relevant to their industry.

Here is what their customers do. They search the business name. They see a Facebook page that was last updated in March, or a Yelp page with a competitor's ad on top. They do the thing the ad asks them to do.

The owners who say a website is not relevant are usually the ones getting most of their work from referrals. Referrals are great. Referred customers still search your name before they call, and they still expect to find something that looks like a real business.

What to do

  1. Keep Yelp and Facebook. Fill them in, keep them current, ask customers for reviews.
  2. Get a one-page website with your services, your area, your license, your reviews and a call button at the top. That is enough for most service businesses.
  3. Put the website link in your Yelp profile, your Facebook page, your Instagram bio and your Google Business Profile. Every road leads to the one page you control.
